The Morocco national football team is gearing up for another successful World Cup campaign in 2026, following their impressive run in the previous tournament. The 'Lions of the Atlas' wrote a new chapter in the history of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, becoming the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the biggest tournament on the planet. They have maintained their momentum since then and are now looking to deliver another strong performance in North America this summer. This will be Morocco's seventh participation in the FIFA World Cup. The team first appeared on the global stage at the 1970 Mexico tournament, but before reaching the semi-finals in 2022, they had only managed to advance beyond the group stage once, at the 1986 Mexico tournament. Even 40 years ago, the 'Lions of the Atlas' were setting new standards, becoming the first African and Arab team to reach the round of 16 in the World Cup. Can Morocco make a splash on the global stage again? You can be in North America in person to find out. The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, and will feature 16 host cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. A total of 104 matches will be played over 34 days across North America. For the first time, the tournament will feature 48 teams and will be hosted by three countries jointly. Walid Regragui's team will need to be at the top of their game from the start this summer, as they face one of the toughest opening matches among all teams. The Moroccan national team begins its group stage campaign against Brazil in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The five-time World Cup winners have not failed to advance beyond the group stage since 1966, despite losing to African opponents Cameroon during the opening stage in 2022. Scotland awaits in the next match in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The 'Tartan Army' returns to World Cup competition for the first time since 1998, when they failed to win any matches in their group. On paper, it seems that Morocco's toughest match in the group will be the last, where they head to Atlanta to face Haiti, which had its only previous World Cup participation 52 years ago. Morocco has not stopped moving forward since its impressive run in the previous World Cup, and currently occupies 11th place in the FIFA world rankings. The team has won all eight of its matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and has only lost twice in the last two years. In addition to winning the Arab Cup recently, Morocco also won the African Nations Championship title last summer. The team is now seeking to achieve more glory on its home soil, where it is currently hosting the African Nations Championship. The 'Lions of the Atlas' have continued to shine under the leadership of Walid Regragui, who has made a smooth transition from coaching a local club to coaching the national team. Since taking the helm in August 2022, Morocco has won more than 70% of the matches they have played.
